Using social media to learn about potential employees can be an effective tool but comes with legal risks. To help employers understand this, Employment Screening Resources® (ESR) Founder and CEO Attorney Lester Rosen will present a Lorman Education Services live webinar – ‘Screening Applicants Using Social Networking Sites: Legal or Liability?’ – on January 18, 2016 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM EST.
Along with search engines like Google®, employers are now examining social media websites such as Facebook®, LinkedIn®, and Twitter® to find information on job applicants as well as blogs and other online sources. However, some job applicants feel they have been denied opportunities unfairly by employers snooping on social media websites and viewing materials out of context or meant just in fun for friends.
For job applicants, social media websites are places to interact with peers in any manner they choose and entries on these sites are typically not meant for employers to view. By the end of the 90 minute webinar presented by Rosen – the author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual’ and a frequent speaker on due diligence background check issues for ‘ESR Speaks’ – attendees will be able to:
- Explain why recruiters and employers have an interest in incorporating social media sites in their process to screen applicants.
- Define potential online tools for employers – search engines, social networking sites, blogs and chat rooms.
- Describe the social media that can source candidates.
- Identify how Web 2.0 has made it extremely easy for job applicants to create fake employment and education credentials.
This webinar has been approved for 1.5 recertification credit hours toward general recertification through the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). The webinar is also approved for 1.5 Professional Development Credits (PDCs) from the Society for Human Resource (SHRM) SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.
