Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), a global background check provider, will host a live webinar entitled “Top 5 Best Practices for Social Media Background Checks” presented by Ben Mones, CEO and Founder of leading social media screening provider Fama, an integrated ESR partner, on Thursday, May 18, 2017, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM PDT. To register for this event, visit https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3265314621121472770. (To view recorded webinar, visit: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/recording/2707791857734137602).

The webinar will help employers stay compliant and ahead of the curve when screening job applicants online. Mones will explain how to comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) that regulates background checks and avoid using inconsistent social media screening criteria online to unintentionally discriminate against certain groups in violation of U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Guidance.

“Who you are online is very indicative – if not equally indicative – of who you are in the offline world,” Mones stated in an interview with TechCrunch. “This is what people are just starting to come to terms with.” Mones said Fama customers can identify the “social media red flags” that they want to screen for – such as drug use, sexual content, bigotry, or profanity – by analyzing text, images, and video online.

With technology and social media outpacing the law, attendees can join Mones – one of the pioneers in the online screening space – to see how employers can give applicants the opportunity to explain any potentially adverse social media posts and activities. After registering for the webinar, attendees will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. To register, click here.

A social media recruitment survey from a leading job site found the number of employers using social media background checks to screen job candidates increased 500 percent over the past decade, with 60 percent of employers using social media to research job candidates in 2016, up significantly from 52 percent in 2015, 22 percent in 2008, and 11 percent in 2006, when the survey was first conducted.

Social media was mentioned in an article about employment screening trends from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) that stated “more organizations will develop formal policies for how searches will be executed, and who will conduct them, and how the information will be reviewed.” SHRM also “advised working with a third-party provider that will protect against potential discrimination and subjective bias.”
